A blog can be defined as a frequently updated online diary. It is a medium in which you can use to express yourself to the world, share your thoughts, interests and your passions.

Let check some terminologies below:

Amid an occasion I went to not long ago “Ogun Tech Summit”, one of the speaker at the occasion Mr Tolu Ogunlesi (Special Assistant to the President On Digital and New Media) said “You dont have to be successful to blog, you can blog about your failure “. Which truly mean you can blog about anything.

Since you now realize what a blog is let move to “How To Start a Blog”.

How to Start a Blog:

After you have decided on your niche and what you want to blog about, you can then  follow the following steps in having your own blog.

1. Pick your preferred blog platform: The first thing you need to to do is to choose where you want to build your blog.

There are two major type of blogging paltform “WordPress and Blogger”

WordPress – It’s by far one of the biggest blogging platforms in the world, with countless  of plugins and add-ons and it is easy to design. According  to report, there are more than 82 million active users of WordPress.

Blogger – Definitely the next best thing to WordPress. Blogger is owned by Google. You will have access to Google tools like AdSense, Analytics, etc. It is completely free and easy to use and you will have access to HTML code, so there are more customization options.

Blogger is mostly for bloggers and brand builders who don’t want to invest much when setting up their blog.

2. Pick a web hosting for your blog:
This is also another big decision you need to make. You need to decide maybe you will be going for a free blog or you pay for your own -Paid blog

WordPress.com and Blogger offer free blogs but has disadvantages like;

a. You won’t be able to get your OWN domain name. What you will have is
yourblog.wordpress.com or yourblog.blogspot.com

b. The blog is not your OWN. You don’t actually own your blog. It’s hosted on someone else’s web property and they can delete it if they want . A friend of mine woke up one morning to find out is blog of 5years has been deleted from blogger, you know how bad that’s gonna be.

But, if you’re considering a paid blog, you’re the OWNER of your blog. You’ll be able to name your blog whatever you want, “YourName.com”.  You can choose different domain extension like .com, .net, .com.ng, .ng.

Paid hosting varies depending on your webhosting provider. It starts from like $3 to like $10 per month (#1,000 – #3,000 per month).

3. Start a blog of your own domain (if you picked paid blog)

So after choosing a paid blog, you will have to come up with a domain name and a webhosting provider

Domain: This is the url of your website like google.com, twitter.com, therealibk.com.

Hosting: This is the company that help you to put your blog on the internet/online.
It’s like a computer hard-drive on the internet where your blog will be saved.

There are different hosting you can use like bluehost.com, godaddy.com, arvixe.com,qservers.net e.t.c

All you need to do is sign up on your chosen provider, choose your hosting plan and a domain name and look for the one-click WordPress install button on the admin panel.

Once WordPress is installed on your website, all you have to do to start blogging. Go to your wordpress admin page usually www.yourblogname.com/wp-admin and start writing by adding a new post.

4. Design your WordPress blog

This is part is actually fun and can be frustrating too.

So to make your blog look exactly how you want, navigate to Appearance > Themes and install a free WordPress theme or you can go to a theme website like Themeforest.net and buy a theme for around $40.

I will advise you to choose something that looks looks professional and pretty easy to customise.

Your blog’s design should reflect both you and your personality, but also what the blog is about.

No one likes ugly websites.

What’s more, that is it!

I’m sure if you follow the steps correctly you should be able to set your own blog up.
